The handoff is part of the product.
Users do not just judge the result. They judge the transition: what changed, who acts next, and whether the control loop still makes sense when AI is in the middle.
A lot of product trust is won or lost in the handoff.
Not the prompt. Not the model card. Not the benchmark slide.
The handoff.
What changed after the AI touched it? What am I supposed to do next? How do I recover if the system guessed wrong? Can I still see the control loop, or did the product hide it behind "magic"?
Builders keep rediscovering the same thing: users tolerate rough edges more easily than hidden transitions. They can forgive an imperfect output. They do not forgive a workflow that feels unstable.
That is why visible handoffs matter:
- show what the system changed
- make the next human step obvious
- leave a believable fallback path
The cleanest AI products are often not the ones with the most autonomy. They are the ones with the clearest transition from machine judgment back to human judgment.
If the handoff feels crisp, the product feels smarter. If the handoff feels vague, the product feels riskier no matter how strong the model is.
